End date for Chromium VI – September 2017
Chromium VI is widely used as an aluminium surface treatment. It does not occur naturally; it is made through anodically oxidised chromium III ore, which gives it very high potential energy. It emits this by oxidising anything in its vicinity.
Chromium VI’s very high reactivity makes it carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic to reproduction (CMR). These properties impose strict safety precautions during use to protect personnel and the environment.
Every chromium VI compound is included in REACH annex XIV and therefore subject to authorisation.
These compounds were not chosen at random. Only substances of very high concern (SVHC) can be included in annex XIV following a procedure laid down in the REACH regulations.
All applications for authorisation were made before March 2016, and the product cannot be used from September 2017 unless authorised. Authorisation does not cover finished products that may be imported.
Did you know: Miralu stopped using chromium VI in 2006!
